Ah the trusty man-bag! Over the last decade it’s become something of a staple accessory for the modern metrosexual male. Things have certainly come a long way since that famous Friends episode when Joey Tribbiani tips up with a rather effeminate ‘man’ bag. Also, if you’re anything like me and partial to sporting slim fitting denim; you will know that trying to fit your keys, wallet and phone into these figure hugging brutes can be very uncomfortable. So, whether you’re after a bag for a weekend away, to lug your laptop around or something for the great outdoors, fear not as we’ve got it covered with our men’s bag trends for 2014.
1. The Holdall
The Holdall has been around for years and is the number one choice for a weekend trip away. There are some cracking weekend bags on the market this year and I’ve turned to British Designers Paul Smith and Barbour who’ve got some great durable holdalls available this season. Be it a leather, wax or canvas design the holdall will always be one of the most practical bags on the market. Check out my current favourites below.
2. The Laptop Bag
With the surge in popularity of tablets and lightweight laptops over the last few years; its probably a good plan to find something decent to carry them around in. Many of the major menswear designers have taken their typical crossover/messenger bags and have developed them into a smaller, lightweight carry case range. Swedish bag and accessories stalwarts Sandqvist have some fantastic examples of these laptop bags in their current summer season stock. He’s a few of my picks below.

3. The Leather Classic
One for the those gents out there. A classic leather satchel or carry case is never a bad investment. Leather bags are some of the most hardwearing around and unlike most others actually get better with age. I’v turned to my beloved Sandqvist again (they’re pretty damn good when it comes to making bags) for some great examples of formal leather classics that are currently on trend. These are great for housing all your important work documents (the morning paper) and you will also have room to fit a sandwich in there too … what more could you ask for!?
4. The Backpack
Backpacks have always being classed as an outdoor bag. They’re perfect for when you’re heading out for a bit of a stroll; you can stick your waterproof jacket in there, a map, some food/drink … etc. However, I’ve always associated backpacks with school and getting slaughtered for having a ‘Thomas the Tank Engine’ backpack way back when I was about 8 years old. Now it’s only taken me 20 odd years to get over those traumatic days and right on que preppy backpacks are firmly back on trend. Vancouver’s Herschel Supply Co. are leading the way in producing some superb backpacks and I’ve picked out a beauty from their Little American collection below.

5. The Tote Bag
Now in women’s fashion tote bags have been on trend for years. However, us men have been a little slow to catch on. Now I tend to use a tote bag when I’m heading off for a swim and their lightweight, simple design mean it’s a really convenient option for just throwing in your necessities and heading out. Some of you might think tote bags have got a bit of a girly stigma attached to them. Well don’t be so quick to judge; there’s actually plenty of heavy duty leather options around this summer that look the business. Even man of the moment Matthew McConaughey can be seen sporting them and he’s not doing to bad for himself, is he?
